We all need a place to call home. A home is the foundation of everything in life. A healthy, sustainable, welcoming community is where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. When we are securely rooted in our community, we are more likely to invest in it and care for it.
Working people who help make Wellfleet what it is — Fishermen, Teachers, Town Workers, Tradespeople, Healthcare Providers, and Artists — can't afford to live here anymore.
Even if they can afford to, they can't find a place. It's only getting worse.
Before the pandemic, we had a housing problem. Now, with the rapid escalation in house prices, we have a full blown housing crisis. The Covid pandemic has made an already hot real estate market even hotter and completely out of reach for people who live and work here. There is no place for the average working person in our community to live. We are losing our young people, our workforce, and our families at an alarming rate. The businesses and services we all need and enjoy are struggling to find staff.
Even our highest paid employees struggle to find a home due to the shortage of housing, regardless of ability to pay. Imagine how hard it is for everyone else. The things we love about Wellfleet are dependent on a diverse and healthy year-round community, but that community is fading. We are on track to become a shade of our former self, a ghost town.

Three groups, the Wellfleet Affordable Housing Trust, the Wellfleet Housing Authority, and the Local Housing Partnership work together to create, sustain and promote affordable year-round housing in Wellfleet.
